myself in Santa Ana and had to resort to living elsewhere for the last five years.
In May 2015, 1 graduated from Texas State University's MFA Program in Creative
Writing with an emphasis in Fiction and a cognate in Media Studies. My writings,
workshops and lifestyle continue to promote community empowerment, cultural
awareness and global sharing.
Through all my years of change and displacement, I consistently return to Santa Ana to
make it home again. Recently, I was awarded an artist -in- residence for a mixed -media
literary project — Santana's Fairy Tales is supported in part by The Andy Warhol
Foundation for the Visual Arts, through a grant supporting the Artist -in- Residence
initiative at GCAC. Similarly, LibroMobile will assist me in empowering my community
through the cultural and literary arts, while finally establishing myself as a full -time
resident of Santa Ana.
Narrative for proposed use of funds::
The Investing In The Arts Grant Opportunity will fund and initiate a self- sufficient literary
and cultural arts initiative, which will offer workshops, readings and books in Santa Ana
extensively past the funding period. The $5000 stipend will be divided in three sections:
research ($2000), LibroMobile ($2000) and community -based programming ($1000).
While collaborating in research with Jan Hofer, we will invest approximately 80 hours
combined over one month's span to assess and put into motion the most economical
way to retrofit the plant cart donated by ABM into a traveling bookmobile. Hofer's
experience with AntenaMovil will provide a path to success in constructing and
mobilizing LibroMobile. We will also research and shop for books, focusing on the
percentage of Spanish speakers as well as diverse interests within Santa Ana. Our
combined connections in the writing industry will be instrumental in obtaining
economical books to stock the LibroMobile and offer as part of the Little Free Library.
Hofer has also proposed to conduct a workshop, which can cover translating and tine
publications as tools for community building. Hofer's $1000 stipend is to fund her time
for research, book orders and a community -based workshop. My $1500 stipend is to
support time for research, book orders and five additional workshops throughout the
funding period. Additionally the grant will help me invest in one -on -one professional
development with a mentor and build momentum in my role as a literary arts leader in
Santa Ana.
The LibroMobile will be a visual art piece of Santa Ana. I requested $1500 to retrofit the
donated plant cart into a traveling bookstore based on the budget Hofer utilized for the
AntenaMovil (without the motor). The goal is to convert the plant cart into a bookmobile
resembling a "palatero" or "frutero" pushcart or a pull -cart with an un- motorized bike. An
additional $500 will be used to purchase books.
The remaining $500 will be used to invite renowned writers of color who have yet to
present their work in Santa Ana, with three of them specifically being Spanish
writers /speakers. I will collaborate with Poets & Writers to gain additional grant money
for more writers to participate. With my current relationship in the writing industry, I am
