community that makes up Santa Ana.
LibroMobile is a literary, community -based initiative, led by local author Sarah Rafael
Garcia and hosted by Grand Central Art Center (GCAC) and Alta Baja Market (ABM),
that integrates literature, visual exhibits and year -round workshops and readings.
LibroMobile explores a long held tradition of bookmobiles as traveling libraries that
promote the distribution of information and is inspired by the AntenaMOvil project
founded by Jen Hofer. ABM has offered to donate a plant cart on wheels to reconfigure
as a push cart or cart pulled by a bike. The design of the LibroMobile is nostalgic of the
iconic paletero carts or fruit vendors that are part of downtown Santa Ana. To hear or
see a paletero or frutero cart builds cultural interest (from locals and visitors) to know
that something authentic and familiar is being offered, and LibroMobile will achieve the
same connections through relevant literature.
The LibroMobile will not only be mobile but also an engaging marketing tool to build
community and promote literacy. It will reside at GCAC and travel throughout Santa Ana
visiting a variety of communities, including Calle Cuatro. The LibroMobile Project
intends to offer affordable books by writers of color, bilingual and Spanish books for
children, youth, and adults, as well as books that speak to culture and social justice
issues relevant to the local community. Stocked items will include approximately 200
books ranging from handmade zines to popular titles, to small press bilingual
publications, a community board to post local resources and a traveling Little Free
Library-this will serve as a book exchange. When someone wants to borrow a book
instead of purchasing their own copy, they will provide another book for someone else
to read for free. LibroMobile's creative writing workshops and literary events will guide
Santa Ana residents of all ages to read, write, revise, polish and submit their own work
for possible publications and also bring award - winning writers of color for live readings
and book signings. Simultaneously with the mentorship of a local art center and new
business, the LibroMobile Project will also serve as an entrepreneurial incubator for a
community -based bookstore in Santa Ana.
Type of Application::
Artist based in Santa Ana
Need::
$5000
I am applying for::
Equipment, Materials & Supply,Other
If other please state below::
I will utilize support towards mentorship and
of Antena and AntenaMdvil.
project research with Jen Hofer, co- founder
Antena is a language justice and language experimentation collaborative founded in
2010 by Jen Hofer and John Pluecker, and currently involving a range of writers, artists
